large apples, cored, peeled and sliced. You can use a variety of apples or any of your favorites. Sweet, tart, doesn't matter.
1 cup
white sugar - optional. This will depend on the apples you choose. If you choose a sweet everyday eating apple, no sugar will be needed. If you choose a tart baking apple, you'll need the sugar!

fresh squeezed lemon juice.
