Any method will work for hard boiled, but soft boiled takes some additional precision. This method may work if you take the time to customize it to your specific pan, burner, and altitude, but it's definitely not a one size fits all approach. I prefer the method where I place the eggs into boiling water, as there are fewer variables to manage to achieve the consistency I want.
